Tinubu solicits support for Nigeria’s AU Commissioner seat

President Bola Tinubu, the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of States and Government, has called on member states to support Nigeria’s bid to retain the position of AU Commissioner for Political Affairs and Security. He made this appeal during the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on Sunday, July 7.

President Tinubu emphasised the significance of the upcoming AU election scheduled for February 25, 2025. He highlighted the security challenges faced by the West African region, including terrorism, violent extremism, and banditry. Given these challenges, he urged member states to back the re-election of Nigeria’s current representative, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye.

“Our region continues to face significant security challenges, including terrorism, violent extremism, and banditry. Currently, West Africa holds the position of AU Commissioner for Political Affairs and Security, a crucial role for our region. Therefore, I solicit support for the candidacy of Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, seeking re-election as the sole male candidate for this position for our region,” President Tinubu stated.

The AU Commission seat occupied by Ambassador Adeoye is key for addressing the region’s security concerns. Tinubu reiterated that retaining this seat is essential for ensuring stability and peace in West Africa.

Additionally, the AU has expressed its disapproval of the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, emphasising the importance of unity within ECOWAS.

Moussa Faki, Chairperson of the AU Commission, represented by Ambassador Adeoye, commended ECOWAS for its efforts in addressing regional insecurity and maintaining constitutional transitions.

“African Union is very proud of ECOWAS. We advocate and fully support the unity of ECOWAS. The withdrawal of the three countries is not acceptable to the African Union,” Faki stated, assuring that the AU will continue to support ECOWAS in its endeavors.
