A student of the Department of Psychology in the University of Lagos, Mr. Ayodele Daniel Dada, has set a record at the institution by becoming its first student of the university to graduate with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0 at its 2014/2015 convocation ceremony slated to start on February 28.
The school’s convocation will kick off with a lecture to be delivered by the Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu at its main auditorium.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Rahaman Ade-Bello, who briefed journalists on the perfect score, as a CGPA of 5.0 is the highest a student can attain in most Nigerian universities, said the institution was glad to break another record, adding that the student showed exceptional academic prowess.
According to him, “This means he scored As in all courses he took in the four-year programme. I congratulate Mr. Dada and the staff of the Department of Psychology for this feat.”
He added that a total of 10,907 students would be graduating, of which 5,472 are undergraduates, while 5,434 are postgraduates from the Faculties of Arts, Education, Environmental Sciences, and the College of Medicine, among others.
“A total of 178 students also bagged First Class degrees,” he said.
Ade-Bello expressed delight with the milestones the university had recorded over the years in its stride to uplift standards, saying: “Our quality of teaching has improved and we have been able to put in place an entrepreneurship and skills development centre to make students job ready.
“We also have special skills in-house which will make students employable immediately.”
Also expected at the convocation ceremony is the former President, Academy of Engineering and former Director General of Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Mr. Vincent Maduka, who will chair the lecture while the Shehu of Bornu, Alhaji Abubakar Umar El-kanemi, who was recently appointed as the institution’s seventh chancellor will be installed on the last day of the three-day ceremony.
