The Usmanu Danfodio University Sokoto weekend matriculated 7,290 students for the 2016/2017 academic session.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Zuru disclosed that over 22,000 candidates applied by UTME or DE for admission into the institution which is an increase of about 40 percent over last year.
Out of the total 7,290 who secured admission, the Faculty of Science recorded the highest 2,920 students in compliance with the Federal Government directive on Science to Humanity student ratio of 60 – 40.
The Faculty of Education and Extension Services recorded second with 1,744 while 732 students got admission into the Faculty of Agriculture.
This was followed by the Faculty of Social Sciences with 464 new students and Faculty of Arts and Islamic Studies with 397.
The least was Faculty of Veterinary Medicine with 110 successful new intakes.
Professor Zuru also disclosed that the National University Commission, NUC, has granted approval for the University to establish a Faculty of Engineering with effect from the 2016/2017 academic session.
He explained that the Faculty was to take off with 5 full time Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Information and Communication Technology and Environmental Management and Resources programmes.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, this development would enable the Institution to key into the laudable determination of the Federal Government to industrialise Nigeria.
He urged the matriculating students to always strive to do what is good to become better citizens after finishing their studies in the Institution.
