Why Finidi George quit Nigeria Super Eagles job; NFF source confirms exit

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed the departure of Finidi George as Head Coach of the Super Eagles after just two games in charge.

Finidi, who was appointed in April following the team’s silver-winning performance at the 2023 AFCON, had been working as an assistant coach under former head coach Jose Peseiro for 20 months. His brief tenure as head coach saw him scrutinized heavily, especially after Nigeria’s shocking 2-1 defeat to the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in Abidjan, which added to their poor run in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The mounting fear of not qualifying for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada has led the NFF to decide to hire a foreign Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles. A source at the NFF Secretariat revealed on Saturday that Finidi tendered his resignation via email late Friday and indicated that he would deliver the hard copy in person after the Sallah break.

The decision to resign stemmed from Finidi’s reluctance to work under a foreign Technical Adviser, which would relegate him to an assistant role—a position he previously held under Peseiro.

During Finidi’s brief stint, Nigeria extended its winless run in the qualifiers, having drawn two matches under Peseiro. The Super Eagles currently sit 5th in Group C of the qualification log, with 3 points, trailing behind Rwanda, South Africa, and Lesotho, and only ahead of Zimbabwe.
