Why I dumped pick pocketing for robbery ~ bricklayer

Twenty seven year old leader of seven man robbery gang, Dapo Simeon who was arrested for serial robberies in Lagos has stated that he dumped pick pocketing for robbery because of the prevailing economic down turn which has made many people to go about with empty pockets.
He was nabbed by operatives of the Lagos Rapid Response Squad, RRS, along with seven others for robbing passers-by at Ojota, Ketu and Mile 12 at different times.

The suspect, who confessed that he had robbed many people said he was trained as bricklayer which he later abandoned for pick pocketing.
The Oyo State born suspect revealed that he was a pick pocket for more than three years before graduating into robbery.
some months ago because he was not getting much from people at bus stops.
He pointed out that after he graduated to robbery he specialised in stealing phones, jewellery and money from his victims.
“I can’t remember the number of phones I have stolen from passers-by in Ojota, Ketu and Mile 12. I was trained by Olasege and later Femi. Both of them are my bosses. They live in Mushin, Idi – Oro area. They taught me the job.

He further alleged that he sold the stolen items to a stand by buyer. Hear him: “I sold all the phones I got at night or the previous day to one Baba Iyabo. He came to Down Blow area in Mile 12 to collect the phones and jewellery very early in the morning.”

Dapo and his colleagues were said to have been picked up when two young women he robbed the previous day at MKO Garden near Ojota reported to RRS monitors attached to Ojota

Commenting on the issue Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Dolapo Badmos, said the suspects have given the police useful information that assisted in clamping down on others.

She said, “based on their confessional statements to the Police we arrested others.”

A member of the team told our reporter that immediately the victim reported to the Police, “we went there and met two men, John Obinna and Sunday Ugwu. After interviewing and searching the duo, we saw stolen phones and an unused sim card, which was traced to its original owner, Mr Adebayo Ogunleye.”

He added that Ogunleye in his statement at the RRS Headquarters, Alausa revealed that he was waylaid by some hoodlums between Ojota and Mile 12 who robbed him and in trying to collect his two phones, matcheted and head-butted him into surrendering his phones (Microsoft Lumia 535 & Tecno T5) as well as his wallet containing BVN Card, First Bank verve card, Master Card among others.
The suspects include John Obinna, Sunday Ugwu, Chinonso Onnogo, Chuka Eze, Kadir Afolabi, Segun Pascal and David Bassey.
