World Cup: Why Super Eagles failed to qualify – Peter Obi; Tells fans, Don’t watch with despair

World Cup

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has urged the country’s football fans not to despair due to the absence of the country’s senior soccer team, the Super Eagles, at the World Cup which started off yesterday, Thursday, June 11, 2026.

Mr. Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), in an X post, said that rather than despair, Nigerians should see the absence of the Super Eagles at the world soccer fiesta, which is holding in the United States, Canada and Mexico, as “a reminder of where Nigeria ought to be.”

The former Governor of Anambra State, who said he identifies with the nation’s teeming football followers, noted that the failure of the country’s team to qualify for the global competition was not due to a deficit of talent, but is “a direct consequence of a deficit in leadership, planning, and institutional support.”

In the post, titled “As the World Cup Begins Without Nigeria,” Obi insisted that Nigeria has “abundant talent,” stressing that “We must move our country from being a nation of mere consumers of global entertainment to a nation of proud producers and competitors.”

He also pointed out that “the task of building a better Nigeria rests primarily on the shoulders of the younger generation.”
