Rivers State government has lashed out at the All Progressives Congress, APC, gubernatorial candidate in the 2015 general elections, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside, for distractive and irresponsible condemnation of governance in the state.
Speaking to newsmen in Port Harcourt, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Barrister Emma Okah, condemned the unnecessary criticism of the activities of the government particularly, the Neighbourhood Watch Safety Corps.
He said that Peterside does not understand the security needs of the state and the people’s apprehension arising from it.
The Commissioner further said that Peterside, who lives in Lagos State, did not understand how the Rivers people feel towards stemming insecurity and that if he had Rivers blood running in his veins he would have supported the Corps, pointing out that the law, which has been assented to by the Governor has come to stay in the state.
“Dakuku doesn’t live in Rivers State and possibly believes that he has no security needs in Rivers State. He lives in Lagos State. But those of us in Rivers State and indeed the people of Rivers State, who are here, believe that the government of Rivers State owes them a duty to secure them and provide sufficient security cover for them and their property. And so, if Dakuku doesn’t need it, the people of Rivers State need it. We need it more than before”, he said.
Speaking further, Barrister Okah stated that the establishment of the Neighbourhood Watch Safety Corps by the state government was to assist security agencies in fighting against criminality in the oil-rich state.
“The Rivers State Government is asking Dakuku Peterside to keep his advice to himself because as far as we are concern the Neighbourhood Watch project is on course and will be there to serve the interest of the people of Rivers State”.
It would be recalled that Dr. Peterside had advised the government to put off the Neighbourhood Watch Safety Corps until all grey areas have been corrected.
