Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo’s Presidential campaign may have suffered a major setback following the dumping of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, by one of his political henchman, Senator Saidu Umaru Kumo.
Senator Kumo, a foremost politician who was the Director-General for Governor Dankwambo’s re-election campaign team in the 2015 election addressed a press conference in his house Monday afternoon where he announced that he had quit the PDP because of irreconcilable differences with Governor Dankwambo, a known presidential hopeful for 2019.
Giving reasons for leaving the PDP where he also added that there is no room for reconciliation, Senator Kumo said he had been forced to leave the PDP against his wish because he had discovered that he has become a stumbling block to some people.
In his words, “First of all, I am not needed at the State level of the party, I don’t have any problem with the leadership of the PDP at the State level or at the national level at all. What I discovered is that the Governor of Gombe State doesn’t need me in the PDP. I am not useful to him any more in Gombe State.
“They do everything humanly possible to get me out of PDP in Gombe State through him (Dankwambo), especially some of his surrogates. So as a politician who has been in this business for close to forty years, I feel I better give way to those that feel I am a stumbling block, let me give them a chance”.
He stated however that he was not declaring for any political party now but wants to take his time to study the political arena, other parties existing and see which one he will belong to.
Kumo, who was one time National Secretary of the ANPP and Adviser to Late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua, said he will formally write his local Government, State and National chapters of the party about the withdrawal of his membership of the PDP.
However, reacting for Governor Dankwambo, the Gombe state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Alhaji Suleiman Umar Ahmed, said Umar Kumo left the party for his own selfish reasons.
According to him, Kumo may have another reason for dumping the PDP but not that Governor Dankwambo disliked him adding that Governor Dankwambo did not drive him away from the party.
“If Governor Dankwambo disliked him, he wouldn’t have appointed him as his coordinator in 2015. Maybe he has his own mission for dumping the PDP but not for the reasons he stated”, Umar Ahmed Stated.
