A group called Southern Borno Movement for Rotation of Power, SBMRP, has called for rotation of power in Borno come 2019 governorship election in the state.
The Chairman, SBMRP, Engineer Ibrahim Usman at a press briefing held at Barwee Hotels Maiduguri on Friday said that for a sense of inclusiveness, justice and equity, there was need for the people of Northern and Central Borno to give opportunity for the people of Southern Borno to produce the next Governor come 2019.
“There must be justice, equity and sense of inclusiveness of various ethnic groups and communities to promote unity, to move the state forward with developments and unity,” he declared.
The chairman of the group said the movement is holding a one-day summit on Saturday in Maiduguri, with the theme: “Borno and the Challenges of Leadership,” under the Chairmanship of Prof. Peter Lassa.
Engr. Usman stated that democracy is a game of numbers, Southern Borno has been playing the second fiddle since the handing over of power by the military in October, 1979.and that there was need for the other zones to give Southern Borno the opportunity to occupy the number one seat in the state
“Since Chief Olusegun Obasanjo handed over power, to the democratically elected Government of Alhaji Shehu Shagari in 1979, Southern Borno has been playing the second fiddle of Deputy Governorship for four decades,” he said.
He said “for the 40 years of democratically elected governments in Borno state, the Governorship position has remained either in Borno North or Central, without a single shift to Southern Borno.
“We must not play the second fiddle in the 2019 General Elections. The Borno South Senatorial District, which comprises nine councils has ‘credible and competent’ leaders of trust and integrity to serve the people of Borno state,” said Usman.
He said the shift of power would be based on “negotiations, empathy and fairness and justice and patriotism to serve the people, irrespective of their religion, ethnicity and political affiliations.
He also warned that whenever there is no “justice and equity” there will be no peace in the state. This was why, he said, the ‘movement for rotation of power,’ is sensitizing traditional rulers and other stakeholders on the need for power shift to the South.
He further said that a good leader must not only have basic qualifications, but should ensure justice, equity and
fairness to the people that elected him/her into office.
