The Silver News Communication, publishers of Silvernews Newspaper Online and Wakawaka Sports, the nation’s No.1 community sports paper, has nominated the University Don, global philanthropist, community leader and indefatigable rights activist, Professor Eddie Oparaoji as one of the recipients of her maiden prestigious Special Recognition/Merit Award. This will be presented at their 1st Edition of Mbaise Sports Merit Awards/Drug Awareness Program, to be held on December 23, 2021, at the Paragon Hotels, Eke-Nguru, Aboh Mbaise LGA, in Imo State at 1PM. In the award notification letter, The Silver News Communication said it was making the recognition based on Prof. Oparaoji’s “outstanding track records.”
Reacting to the news of the award, Professor Oparaoji who is a US based Pharmaceutical Executive and Chairman of Mbaise Policy Roundtable (MPR), said, “I am truly humbled by this, not just for recognizing me, but for their using the occasion to launch a long overdue Mbaise-wide awareness campaign against drug abuse. I have been in the vanguard of the fight against the drug abuse ravaging out community, especially our youth, and I am so elated that Silvernews is now coordinating a powerful coalition and reinforcement to take on the scourge head on .” The other members of the Silvernews-led Coalition are the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCANOV) and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
It must be recalled that Professor Oparaoji has been on the crusade against drug abuse and had in the recent past, participated in a program with the theme “Drug Abuse, Dreams Destroyed”, during which he lamented that “illicit drugs use is now disturbingly prevalent in our community especially among our youths…it carries devastating consequences for the individual, their families and community.”
