
2021 Africa Cup of Nations winners, Senegal, suffered a 2-0 2022 FIFA World Cup loss to Netherlands on Monday evening in Qatar.
With their key man Sadio Mane ruled out of the tournament, the Terenga Lions began their campaign with some changes in players and pattern.
For large periods of the game, Senegal looked more purposeful in attack but had the Dutch keeper to the rescue of Netherlands on three occasions.
With the game headed towards a stalemate, Gakpo fired Netherlands ahead in the 84th minute to break Senegalese hearts.
Klassen added a second deep into stoppage time to seal a 2-0 win for Louis Van Gaal’s men.
With the win, Netherlands will join Ecuador at the top of the standings in Group A. Both teams level on 3 points and a +2 goal difference.
Aliou Cisse and his Senegal charges will have to avoid defeat Vs Ecuador and Qatar if they must go past the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
