Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the knock-out round of the 2023 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) got a significant boost Wednesday evening, as Solomon Agbalaka powered the Flying Eagles to a 1-0 win over Egypt.
Nigeria and Egypt came into the game after failing to win their opening games of the 2023 U-20 AFCON.
While Nigeria suffered a 1-0 loss to Senegal, hosts Egypt were held to a goalless draw by Mozambique in the opening round of matches in Group A.
A drab first half at the Cairo International stadium saw both teams failing to convert from the few chances created.
In the second half, Mahmoud Gaber tutored Young Pharaohs were denied on two occasions by the Flying Eagles goalkepeer before Agbalaka struck.
A corner-kick was met by a bullet header from Agbalaka in the 70th minute for what turned out to be the only goal of the contest.
It finished 1-0 in favour of Nigeria who occupy second spot in Group A behind leaders Senegal.
Senegal booked a knock-out round spot with a convincing 3-0 victory over Mozambique in the other Group A game decided on Wednesday February 22.
As it stands, only Senegal are sure of their place in the knock-out rounds ahead of the last group games.
Nigeria will face Mozambique hoping to at least avoid defeat while Egypt face a must win clash against Senegal.
