Late Senator Ayogu Eze: A patriot, fighter

Former Senator Ayogu Eze, who passed on to glory on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 has been described as a sincere patriot who diligently served Nigeria and humanity in various capacities and as a man who fought for the transformation of Enugu North Senatorial zone and for Enugu State during his life time.

These and similar tributes have followed the demise of the one-time governorship hopeful who, until his death, was the Enugu State representative at the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

Kenechukwu Ayogu Eze, the first son of the departed political leader, who officially announced the transition of his father at the age of 65, said that Senator Eze, who also served as a member of the Board of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), died surrounded by members of his family in the early hours of Wednesday in an Abuja hospital after a brief illness.

According to him,  Senator Eze, while representing Enugu North Senatorial District in the 6th and 7th National Assembly served as chairman, Senate Committee on Information and Media and also as chairman, Senate Committee on Works.

A journalist of note before veering into politics, with stints at The Guardian newspapers and Newswatch magazine, Eze at some point in his political career, became Commissioner for Information & Media, as well as Special Adviser in Enugu State.

Paying tribute to the late Eze, the Senator currently representing Enugu North District, Okechukwu Ezea, described him as “a special friend, a strong ally, a gifted writer, a skilled orator, a leader par excellence, a gadfly of the struggle for the creation of Adada state, and a worthy son of Igbo Nsukka.”

Ezea recalled that they fought together “in the same trenches for the transformation of our zone, our state and our country,” that Eze on the floor of the Senate “was very vocal, vibrant and efficient” and that his “contributions to debates during plenary were rich, thoughtful and illuminating.”

He condoled with Senator Eze’s wife, children and siblings as well as the departed’s immediate and extended family of Umuida, Enugu-Ezike, Igbo-Eze North LGA of Enugu State.
