New Islamic Year: Sokoto govt declares Thursday as public holiday

Following announcement by the Sultanate Council on the New Islamic Year, Sokoto State Government has declared tomorrow, Thursday, October 15, (Muharram, 1, 1437) AH, as a public holiday.

A statement issued in Sokoto signed by Malam Imam Imam, the spokesman to Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, congratulated Nigerian Muslims for witnessing the New Year and appealed to them to use the occassion of the public holiday to intensify prayers for the nation.

The statement further urged all citizens to ‘care, love and protect one another’, adding that Islamic virtues of unity, peace and honesty should be promoted by all persons.

“ Sokoto state government will continue with policies and programmes that will uplift the dignity and living standard of all persons,” the statement said.

It equally commiserated with the families of indigenes of the state who died or got injured in the Hajj stampede last month, just as it reiterated government’s commitment to assist families of all victims, saying ‘no victim will be left unattended to.’

The statement prayed for a prosperous Islamic New Year for all citizens.
