CAF postpones CHAN 2024 to August

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the postponement of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), initially set to take place from February 1 to February 28, 2025. The tournament will now be held in August 2025, with the decision aimed at ensuring better preparations and a high-quality competition.

In a statement released on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, CAF highlighted several reasons for the postponement, including infrastructure readiness, logistical challenges, and a commitment to delivering an exceptional tournament.

Key Factors Behind the Postponement

1. Infrastructure Readiness
CAF stressed the importance of ensuring that all facilities meet international standards. The co-hosting nations—Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda—require additional time to complete critical upgrades to stadiums and other essential infrastructure.

2. Complexities of Co-Hosting
This edition of CHAN marks the first time three countries will jointly host the tournament. The logistical demands of coordinating efforts across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are significant, and the postponement allows more time to address these challenges.

3. Commitment to Quality
CAF reiterated its dedication to maintaining high standards for the competition. The delay ensures that all aspects of the tournament, from organisation to execution, meet expectations.

4. Adequate Preparation Time
The additional months will provide the co-hosts with ample time to finalise venue upgrades, security measures, and transportation logistics, which are crucial for a seamless tournament.

5. Enhanced Fan and Player Experience
CAF aims to deliver a memorable event for both players and fans. By rescheduling, the governing body seeks to avoid potential shortcomings that could detract from the tournament experience.

Despite the postponement, the draw for CHAN 2024 will proceed as planned on Wednesday, January 15, at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.
