PDP moves to bring Peter Obi back ahead of 2027 elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed that it is working to bring back former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, into the party.

Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Ibrahim Abdullahi, made this known during an interview on Arise Television. He described Obi as a “valuable political asset” who could strengthen the PDP’s chances in the 2027 general elections.

“Peter Obi is our product. We want him back because he is a great asset to any political party,” Abdullahi said.

He praised Obi’s strong performance in the 2023 elections, where he secured over six million votes nationwide despite what he called “massive rigging” and “institutional obstacles.

“If not for those challenges, he would have done even better. His over six million votes show he is a force to reckon with,” Abdullahi added.

Obi, who left the PDP for Labour Party shortly before the 2023 primaries, came third in the presidential race behind PDP’s Atiku Abubakar and APC’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who eventually won. His popularity among youths and urban voters has made him one of Nigeria’s most influential opposition figures.

Abdullahi admitted that Obi’s exit was a big loss for the PDP but stressed that the party still respects and values him. “Every party would want someone like Obi. PDP will not give up on this effort,” he said.

He also revealed that the PDP is holding internal consultations and long-term strategies to unite the opposition ahead of 2027, and that bringing Obi back is part of that plan.

This move comes as political observers and civil groups call for a strong opposition alliance to challenge the ruling APC, which has been in power since 2015.
