Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing African Athletics Championships was won by Tobi Amusan after she came first in the women’s 100m hurdles final on Wednesday.
The world record holder showed her class throughout the competition, winning comfortably from the heats to the final race.
Nigeria also celebrated another medal in the event as Adaobi Tabugbo finished third to win bronze. It was her first individual medal for Nigeria at a major championship.
Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller took the silver medal after finishing behind Amusan in the final.
Team Nigeria had earlier won medals on Tuesday in the women’s discus throw event.
Divine Oladipo claimed silver, while Obiageri Amaechi secured bronze.
With Amusan’s victory, Nigeria will hope for more success as the championships continue in Accra.
After the competition, Amusan is expected to continue her preparations for the Diamond League season.
