Wike wants to stop Jonathan ratification convention – PDP alleges

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of attempting to frustrate its planned presidential candidate ratification ceremony scheduled to hold in Abuja on Saturday.

In a statement issued on Friday by the party’s Interim National Working Committee and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the PDP claimed that the management of A Class Event Centre informed the party of an alleged threat by the FCT Minister to shut down the facility if the venue hosted the party’s event.

According to the statement, the PDP said it had fully paid for the use of the event centre and had also notified relevant security agencies about the gathering.

The party added that its lawyers had been directed to write to the management of A Class Event Centre to remind them of the existing agreement between both parties.

The PDP maintained that its special convention to ratify the presidential candidature of former President Goodluck Jonathan would still hold as planned on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at A Class Event Centre, Wuse 2, Abuja, by 10 a.m.

The opposition party described any attempt to suppress political opposition through intimidation as undemocratic, insisting that Nigeria is governed by the rule of law.

“There is nowhere in our laws where the Minister of the FCT is empowered to determine events that should be held and where they should be held,” the statement said.

The PDP also called on party leaders, members of the National Executive Committee (NEC), and other stakeholders across the country to attend the event as scheduled.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official response from the office of the FCT Minister regarding the allegations made by the PDP.
