Tinubu approves N10bn fund, sets up Task Force to boost Ebola preparedness

President Bola Tinubu has approved the creation of a Presidential Task Force on Ebola preparedness and other emerging public health threats, while also releasing N10 billion to strengthen Nigeria’s emergency health response system.

The new task force will coordinate efforts to prevent and respond to possible disease outbreaks across the country. It will bring together key government agencies and state authorities to improve preparedness and ensure a rapid response to health emergencies.

The intervention fund will be used to enhance disease surveillance, strengthen emergency operations and improve the country’s ability to manage potential outbreaks.

The decision follows growing concerns over recent Ebola cases reported in parts of Africa and the need for stronger preventive measures to protect Nigerians.

As part of the government’s response plan, states with international airports and major border routes have been directed to submit detailed preparedness plans. Authorities will also increase monitoring at airports and border entry points through stricter passenger screening and health checks.

Isolation and referral centres at major international airports will be activated, while similar facilities will be expanded to other parts of the country where necessary.

Additional measures include the use of pre-arrival health declarations for travellers from high-risk countries, improved sanitation at airports and cargo terminals, and closer monitoring of flights arriving from affected regions.

The task force is also expected to work with aviation, security and diplomatic authorities to strengthen safety measures and reduce the risk of importing infectious diseases into Nigeria.

The latest steps form part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve national health security and ensure the country remains prepared for any public health emergency.
