Professor Nwankwo, who holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the same discipline from the same University and emerged the first Ph.D. graduate in Economics from UNN 25 years after the institution was established.
Besides publishing books on economics, including Stable Growth and Foreign Exchange, Inflation & the Structure of Aggregate Output, and History and Problems of Nigeria’s Public Debt, 1900-2017, Dr. Nwankwo, from Obowo in Imo State, Nigeria, has also written literary works, Tatu (drama), Through the Storm (drama) and Oracles for Heroes (prose), besides several academic articles on economics published nationally and internationally.
He spent some years as a lecturer at his alma mater, UNN, before going into banking and finance where he rose to top management positions, including at the World Bank. From the banking halls, he joined the DMO as an Assistant Director in 2001 and rose to become the Director General in 2007.
In 2017, he completed two terms of five years each at DMO and thereafter, has served as a Chief Economic Adviser to a Governor of Imo State before returning to the academia with his appointment as a Professor of Practice at MIVA Open University, the first fully online private open University in Nigeria.
