Ronke Oshodi addresses backlash over political comments

Nollywood actress, Ronke Ojo, popularly known as Ronke Oshodi-Oke, has addressed the backlash that followed her recent comments about her association with politicians.

Oshodi-Oke said the politicians she works for had not offended her, clarifying that the only incident that annoyed her was a controversy in 2020, which she had previously spoken about.

“The people I work for in politics didn’t offend me in any way. The only thing they did that annoyed me was the saga in 2020, and I came out to speak about it,” she said.

The actress had come under criticism after an interview with African A-List in which she said she supports politicians for money.

She also appealed to members of the public not to criticise her if they saw her around political figures, explaining that she did not want to influence people on whom to vote for.

Oshodi-Oke had described Nigerian politics as “dirty” while explaining her decision not to discuss political issues or campaign for particular candidates.

Her clarification comes amid renewed public discussions over celebrities’ relationships with politicians and their political activities.

In a related development, actor Aremu Afolayan recently faced backlash after a viral clip in which he spoke about President Bola Tinubu’s assistance to his business during a period when the United Arab Emirates imposed visa restrictions on Nigerians.

Following the criticism, Afolayan apologised on Instagram, saying his comments had been misunderstood.

He acknowledged the seriousness of the situation in Nigeria, particularly insecurity, and expressed regret over his remarks.

Actress Biodun Okeowo subsequently defended Afolayan, saying he was sincerely sorry and had taken responsibility for his comments.
