The Super Eagles of Nigeria began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday.
Nigeria fell behind in the 16th minute when Clément Couturier rose highest to head Ryan Ponti’s cross into the net and put Madagascar ahead.
Éric Chelle’s team responded by increasing the pressure, with George Ilenikhena at the centre of several attacking moves.
The young forward came close to scoring after being played through by Calvin Bassey, but his effort was saved by Madagascar goalkeeper Geordan Dupire. Ilenikhena then headed over the bar from Samuel Chukwueze’s cross.
Nigeria eventually got their reward in first-half stoppage time.
Alex Iwobi found Ilenikhena inside the penalty area, and the striker calmly placed the ball into the bottom-left corner to level the score at 1-1.
The Super Eagles continued to push for a second goal after the break.
Ademola Lookman saw his effort blocked inside the box, while Bassey also came close with a header that was saved by Dupire.
Chelle then made two changes, bringing on Moses Usor and Moses Simon for Chukwueze and Akor Adams.
Usor made an immediate impact.
In the 65th minute, the LASK winger received the ball from Semi Ajayi and drove forward from Nigeria’s half. He beat two Madagascar players before cutting inside and firing a left-footed shot into the bottom-right corner to put Nigeria 2-1 ahead.
Madagascar refused to give up and pushed for an equaliser in the final stages, but Nigeria held firm.
Chelle introduced Tolu Arokodare and Taiwo Awoniyi as the Super Eagles managed the closing stages to secure all three points.
The victory gives Nigeria a positive start to their Group L campaign, with the Super Eagles next facing Guinea-Bissau on September 29.
