The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is awaiting an official response from FIFA following a meeting of the FIFA Council in Zurich, Switzerland, on Thursday, October 15, 2026, amid uncertainty over the country’s football leadership crisis, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
There were expectations that the meeting would address the proposed appointment of a Normalisation Committee to oversee the NFF temporarily.
However, FIFA’s statement after the meeting did not confirm whether the proposal had been approved.
Although the issue was not mentioned publicly, this does not necessarily mean it was not discussed behind closed doors.
The crisis followed the August resignations of former NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the federation’s executive board.
In September, a joint delegation from FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) visited Nigeria to meet football stakeholders and discuss possible solutions to the situation.
The appointment of a Normalisation Committee is one of the options reportedly being considered. Such a committee would temporarily manage the federation, introduce reforms and organise elections to restore elected leadership.
Meanwhile, the FIFA Council discussed several issues at its 37th meeting, including football development funding, governance reforms and disciplinary procedures.
FIFA announced plans to increase its football development investment to $6.35 billion for the 2027–2030 period. Under the proposed framework, individual member associations could receive up to $25 million, subject to the required conditions and approval.
The Council also agreed to establish a working group to review FIFA’s governance structure and directed relevant committees to examine disciplinary procedures.
Despite these developments, FIFA has yet to publicly confirm the approval of a Normalisation Committee for Nigeria or announce its possible members.
Nigerian football stakeholders are now waiting for further clarification from the world football governing body on whether the committee will be appointed and when the country’s football administration will return to elected leadership.
Until FIFA makes an official announcement, reports claiming that the Committee has been approved or that its members have been selected remain unconfirmed.
