The Nigerian Army has started the process that will lead to the punishment of two soldiers who brutalised a physically challenged person in Onitsha, Anambra state,, stressing that the conduct of the soldiers amounted to ‘gross professional misconduct.’
A statement by Colonel Sagir Musa, Deputy Director Army Public Relations, said that the two soldiers “have been tried at the unit level in Onitsha, and referred to higher level for appropriate punishment commensurate to the offence committed.”

Full text of the statement reads:

The attention of the Headquarters 82 Division Nigerian Army (NA) has been drawn to a video snip of 2 military police soldiers maltreating a physically challenged person along the new market road, Onitsha today. The Division has with great concern studied the video, identified the perpetrators of this gross professional misconduct. It is our position their actions does not reflect the attitude of today’s NA soldier under the leadership of Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai. It is uncalled for, unwarranted and is therefore condemnable by all civilized people/organizations.
The soldiers have been tried at the unit level in Onitsha, and referred to higher level for appropriate punishment commensurate to the offence committed.
The NA has always preached tolerance, respect for others and peaceful coexistence. NA of today has consistently maintained zero tolerance for indiscipline and human rights violation. Whatever human rights infraction is seen, appropriate sanction will be applied to serve as deterrence to others. This case will not be an exception.
