Reacting to recent statements credited to Prof Yemi Osinbajo, a Yoruba socio-political group, the Oodua Nationalist Coalition, (ONAC) has said that the Vice Ppresident spoke the mind of the Hausa-Fulani oligarchy as against the aspirations of the people of Southern Nigeria, where he comes from.
The VP, weekend, rejected calls for restructuring of the country, insisting that what Nigeria needed was diversification and restructuring.
In a statement issued, Monday, the ONAC Director of Research, Ahmed Olubodun said Osinbajo’s recent statement contradicts the position he has defended for close to three decades until he found himself in a position which appears designed to muzzle the honest, inner conscience.
“What we have seen is another attempt to subvert the burning aspirations of the people and to replace public interest with the interest of a ruinous oligarchy. Mr Vice President has suddenly been encircled by the aura of power for its sake, instead of power for the people that sweat out a difficult living daily on the streets,” ONAC stated.
“We condemn in very strong terms the statement credited to the Vice President that restructuring in not necessary. This is an attempt to truncate what Prof Osinbajo has defended for close to 30 years and one of the greatest pillars of Awolowo’s philosophies on which threshold the All Progressive Congress, (APC) and the VP rose to power and recent fame,” ONAC said in the statement released in Lagos.
ONAC frowns at an attempt by the VP to substitute his own new found mindset with the consciousness of the people he represents. ONAC said those who support the retention of the status quo appear to have turned deaf ears to the violent drums and the trumpets blowing from the East to the West and the North to the South and the bitter crying for freedom of people from the Nigerian fortress state.
ONAC said many people in Yorubaland voted for the APC with the hope that the party would restructure the country for self actualization. “At present, the country has been historically skewed to protect the interest of a few reactionary cabal. Ab initio, their military agents created the states, local governments and the population figures, making the entire country at the eternal mercy of the Hausa-Fulani North. The violence and killings we see daily is because Nigeria is now a bottled up garrison state where people do not get the freedom they desire and are being told they cannon even debate their own future.
ONAC stated “As a Professor of law, it is unfortunate that Mr Osinbajo has thrown away all he read about international laws and self determination all for the benefit of a barbaric and self-seeking system that enslaves and imprisons the conscience.
“The VP statement shows that the current Nigerian leadership seems to have deliberately chosen the part of a shipwreck.” ONAC said the VP should know that what will determine the fate of Nigerian people is not statements made from the comfort of leaders’ homes, but by the iron-cast determination and will of the people to cast away from their shoulders a burden that makes their shoulders ache at all times, so as to put immediate end to their sufferings and mourning.”
