Linus Mba, a retired FIFA-badged referee, on Monday called for adequate security for referees during football matches to guarantee their safety and ensure tension-free officiating.
Mba told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that if the needful was done by the football authorities, referees would definitely perform their duties without fear or favour.
“Adequate security for referees will certainly boost their morale and give them confidence to give their best without fear or favour,’’ he said.
Mba, however, restated his confidence in the ability of Nigerian referees, saying they have been doing well to deserve some commendation.
NAN reports that attacks on referees by fans and even players during football matches are regular occurrences in Nigeria as well as in other football-playing countries.
