
A 24-year-old man, Desmond Bassy, who allegedly lodged in an hotel and failed to pay the accumulated bills, was on Friday arraigned in a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Bassey, whose address is unknown, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of obtaining financial advantage by deception, conduct likely to cause breach of peace and conspiracy.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Ibijoke Akinpelu, told the court that Bassey committed the offences sometime in September at Atlanta Suites, located at No 10B, Sylvia Crescent, Anthony Village, Lagos.
She said that Bassey and others still at large had lodged into the hotel, but failed to pay the bill of N556, 000 which they incurred during their stay .
Akinpelu alleged that when the employees suspected that the accused and his accomplices were not ready to comply, they informed the director of the hotel, one Mr Adesegun Adeoye.
She stated that the accused conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace, when he harassed, intimidated the director who asked that the hotel bills be paid in full.
According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 168 (b), 323, and 412 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
The Magistrate, Mrs O.G. Oghre, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until Jan. 17, 2018 for mention.
