Against the shifting sands of popularity By Fr. Peter Iwuala

“Do not establish your identity upon the shifting sands of popularity because those around you who want you to be a hero, will laugh at you when you do not become a hero.”
Like sunshine, popularity is ephemeral, and defining oneself by what other people think of you creates instability. Popularity fluctuates, frequently influenced by trends, and can go from praise to ridicule in an instant. Psychological biases, such as simplification and projection, contribute to this phenomenon, amplified by the magnifying effects of social media.
Instead of relying on popularity, one should establish a foundation of principles, purpose, abilities, conscience, and relationships. Establishing basic beliefs, getting real feedback, putting mastery over visibility, and controlling social media use are all doable ways to anchor identity. It’s critical to acknowledge that compliments and criticism are temporary rather than final when handling them.
Emotional instability linked to validation, feeling under pressure to fit in, and an inability to speak honestly for fear of losing approval are all indicators of a popularity-based identity. Ultimately, cultivating a robust identity requires the courage to prioritize integrity over external praise, allowing for authentic living regardless of others’ perceptions.
