Akpabio’s aide reported missing after mob attack over Christmas/New Year gifts
Ubokobong Ime Udoworen, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom, has been reported missing after a mob attack by party supporters. Udoworen, also an aide to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, was allegedly attacked for alleged misappropriation of funds designated for Christmas/New Year gifts for the party’s youth wing in the Local Government Area.
The incident occurred after Udoworen distributed gifts, including bags of rice and cash, across the Senatorial District’s 10 Local Government Areas. He faced severe assault by thugs reportedly backed by influential party figures. The mob accused him of misappropriating the gifts, leading to a spontaneous attack. Udoworen was reportedly severely beaten and forcibly shoved into a car, which drove off to an undisclosed location on January 19, 2024.
The APC Publicity Secretary in the state, Barr. OtoAbasi Udo, confirmed the attack, stating that Udoworen was severely beaten. However, he couldn’t provide information about the party chief’s whereabouts or the condition of his health since the incident.
Meanwhile, Udoworen’s parents have petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, seeking justice. The family expressed frustration, stating that their attempts to find a resolution have been unsuccessful. The parents are urging event organizers, security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, and political leaders to locate and present Udoworen to them within the next 24 hours.
The incident highlights the complexity and challenges associated with political activities, internal party dynamics, and allegations of misappropriation within political organizations. The family’s petition to the IGP underscores the need for a thorough investigation and the protection of individuals involved in political activities from violence and harm. The Nigeria Police, Akwa Ibom State Command’s spokesperson, Macdon Odiko could not be reach for comments on the matter which has generated tension within the political space in the South-South state.
