Akwa Ibom 2023: My husband is still in the guber race, convicted Senator Albert’s wife tells supporters

Despite the 42-years jail term slammed on Senator Bassey Albert for corruption by Justice Agatha of the Federal High Court in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State Capital following a case filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), his wife, Pst. Mrs Imaobong Bassey Albert, is confident her husband will be on the ballot for the 2023 Governorship election in Akwa Ibom State.

A sitting Senator and Gubernatorial candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Akwa Ibom State, Senator Akpan is currently serving his jail term but with the process of appeal in motion.

Mrs Albert has, therefore, dismissed fears that her husband will not be allowed to participate in the 2023 governorship election.

She gave the assurances to the women groups under the AkwaubokAbasi campaign organization at the Senator Albert Liaison Centre, Ewet Housing Estate in Uyo, during the December edition of their prayer and fasting programme on Tuesday, December 27, 2022.

She said “My husband’s name will be on the ballot for the 2023 Governorship election and cannot be tampered with or removed, irrespective of efforts by opposing forces.

“I sincerely believe in God that my husband will get justice and bounce back to freedom. They can only try to frustrate him but can’t take him out of the ballot,” she said.

Her stand, one of the Senator’s supporters said, is in line with the constitution as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has no power to disqualify him from contesting the election despite his sentence.

“It’s been a wonderful journey so far and I thank you for being sensitive about the time and devoting yourself to prayers. You have sown the seeds of prayer and those seeds will never go unrecognized. You’ll reap the fruits and your children’s children will also reap them. When God begins to bless Akwa Ibom, you and I, will be partakers,” Mrs Albert stated.

In her husband’s abscence, Mrs Albert has been leading the YPP Governorship Campaigns.

It was gathered that Senator Akpan’s legal team are are working round the clock and hoping to secure his bail pending the determination of his Appeal.

If he regains his freedom before the elections in 2023, it will be a massive boost to the YPP’s chances of rallying votes to unseat the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the polls.
