Akwa Ibom: Police demolish Ibom Youth Council Headquarters, arrest three suspects

Three individuals linked to the disbanded Ibom Youth Council (IYC) have been arrested at the group’s former headquarters in Ikot Isighe, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The suspects are currently being held at the state Police Headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo.

In a coordinated operation, Akwa Ibom State Police Command also demolished the building that had served as the operational base for the IYC. According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, the action followed the proscription of the group by Governor Umo Eno, who ordered security agencies to dismantle the group’s activities.

The operation, which was carried out by a joint security team based on credible intelligence, saw members of the IYC flee upon the arrival of the security forces. Three suspects were apprehended during the raid, and the building was subsequently demolished.

Evidence uncovered during the operation revealed that the IYC had started procuring weapons and conducting military-style training. The group had reportedly been involved in attacks on security installations and private properties, with plans to escalate unrest as 2024 came to a close and into the new year.

In response, state authorities, supported by the security apparatus, have vowed to take all legal measures to uphold Akwa Ibom’s reputation as the most peaceful state in Nigeria. Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may disrupt public peace.

Additionally, the Police Command warned landlords to be cautious when leasing properties, emphasising that any property used for illegal activities, including actions undermining the state, would be demolished, and property owners could face legal consequences.
