Socio-Economic Regeneration of Abia State through Effective Legislation

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) held a two-day retreat for all its House of Assembly members-elect in Lagos on Monday and Tuesday, May 25 and 26th. “The two-day retreat is part of efforts being undertaken by the party to ensure that the legislators hit the ground running for the benefit of Abians,” APGA said.

During the retreat, Dr. Alex Otti (OFR), APGA Governorship Candidate charged Members of the Abia State House of Assembly elected under the Platform APGA to make a difference in the house by focusing on legislation that will enhance the development and quality of lives of the Abia people. He pointed out that the reason for the training is to prepare the APGA elected legislators for their new responsibilities by exposing them to best practices across the world in the conduct of the business of the house. Otti urged participants to relish the Retreat because the outcomes will prepare them for an impactful legislative role in the new legislative tenure.

The Party called on the Lawmakers and all Party supporters and indeed all Abians to be steadfast and committed to the struggle to redeem the mandate of the people through the appropriate legal framework.

Resource persons for the retreat were composed of world class speakers and professionals who covered topics around: Code of Conduct for legislators, the State Bye laws, House Rules and ethics of the legislative profession, others were, the constitution framework and individual Development tips that will help the legislators in discharging their duties to their respective constituencies and to the state.

Some of the returning legislators identified absence of effective legislative oversight on the executive because of the crippling influence of the former governor (T.A. Orji) led executive as the major reason why the legislators failed in their primary check and balance and oversight roles.

After the breakout session, participants agreed on the following next steps in order to stimulate good governance, accountability and development in the state:

  1. Continuous Capacity Building and training for Abia Elected legislators
  2. Improve the Basic Communication skills and strategy of engagements
  3. Improve independence of the Assembly in Oversights and Legislation.
  4. Develop an effective Strategic interface with the Media.

In their vote of thanks, the house members applauded the initiative of Dr. Alex Otti and the party in putting the retreat together. Speaking about the event Hon Chijioke Nwachukwu representing Umuahia South constituency stated “… nothing would have better exposed us to understanding the enormity of the responsibilities our new roles demand of us and nothing would have prepared us better to face the challenges’

In his closing remarks, Dr. Alex Otti thanked the incoming legislatures for making out time to attend the training and for their active participation. He assured them that the leadership of APGA will continue to seek new ways to update them with the soft skills necessary to improve their capacity for optimal contribution to the development of the state.
