Aston Villa thrash Freiburg to win Europa League title

Aston Villa claimed their first major trophy in 30 years after a convincing 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg in the UEFA Europa League final played in Istanbul on Wednesday night.

The English side produced an outstanding performance as goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers sealed a memorable triumph for manager Unai Emery.

Villa opened the scoring in the 41st minute when Tielemans connected perfectly with a cross from Rogers to fire a superb volley beyond Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu.

Just moments before half-time, Buendia produced another brilliant finish, curling the ball beautifully into the far corner from outside the penalty area to give Villa a comfortable lead.

Rogers added the third goal in the second half after calmly finishing from close range following a fine assist from Buendia.

The victory ended Villa’s long wait for silverware, with their last trophy coming in the 1996 League Cup. It was also the club’s first European title since winning the European Cup in 1982.

Villa dominated the game from the opening whistle and looked sharper than the German side throughout the encounter.

The triumph continued Emery’s impressive record in the Europa League, with the Spaniard now winning the competition five times during his managerial career.

Thousands of Villa fans celebrated wildly inside the stadium as the club completed a remarkable rise under Emery, who took over the team in 2022 when they were struggling near the relegation zone.

The success also capped an impressive season for Villa after already securing qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
