Nigeria defeat Ethiopia to set-up Cameroun clash for Paris Olympics spot

Nigeria’s Super Falcons has, defeated Ethiopia at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja to set-up a final qualifying round contest for the 2024 Paris Olympics Women’s Football event against Cameroun.

Nigeria and Ethiopia started the second leg fixture tied 1-1 on aggregate from the first-leg at the Abebe Bikila Stadium, Addis Ababa, last week.

After nearly a half of toil, the Super Falcons took a deserved lead on the stroke of halftime courtesy of striker Uchenna Kanu.

The Nigerian Ladies consolidated on their grip of the contest when matchday skipper, Rasheedat Ajibade scored in the 50th minute off an Asisat Oshoala assist to put the Falcons 2-0 up in front of their fans who were allowed to watch the game without ticket fees as the NFF rallied support for Nigeria’s bid to return to the Olympic games for the first time since the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

Reigning Africa Women’s footballer of the year, Oshoala who was on Monday, October 30 ranked 20th best on the Ballon D’or Women’s award list, added a third for the Super Falcons in the 68th minute.

With the pressure off, the Super Falcons hit full stride and were in perfect control with no signs of a side without Head Coach, Randy Waldrum, who is yet to accept a new contract to continue with the Nigeria Women’s National team job.

Rasheedat Ajibade bagged her brace in the 72nd minute to complete the rout as Nigeria cruised into the final qualifying round with a 4-0 win and 5-1 aggregate result over the Lucy’ of Ethiopia.

Nigeria will now face the Indomitable Lioness of Cameroun who edged out Uganda 3-2 on aggregate in the second qualifying round.

The aggregate winner of the Nigeria vs Cameroun fixture will book a spot for the Football event of the Paris 2024 Olympic games as one of Africa’s representatives.
