By Abuchi Nnopuechi.

A book on the late patriarch, Emmanuel Bolaji Idowu’s unique efforts towards the indigenization of Christianity in Nigeria is set for presentation on June 5, 2025.

The event will take place in the Adeolu Adegbola Hall of the Methodist Theological Institute, Sagamu Ogun State at 11am.

Masterminded by the Methodist Theological Institute Sagamu, it’s titled Tiger by the Tail; Bull by the Horns: Patriarch (Prof) Emmanuel Bolaji Idowu and his Theology, Theory and Practice of the Indigenization of Christianity in Nigeria is co-authored by the rector of the Institute, Rt . Rev (Dr) Raphael Akhijemen Idialu and Isidore Emeka Uzoatu, a University of Nigeria trained Church historian. It is a clarion call for the remembrance of heroes past, the authors said.

The occasion will be chaired by Sir (Dr) Akinola Sonawe while Sir Olayemi Gbolahon will be the chief launcher. The book will be reviewed at the event by the Right Reverend Samuel Ransford Nortey.

Born on September 28, 1913 in Ikorodu Lagos State, Idowu was a Nigerian theologian, scholar and church leader. Following a radio talk in 1962, he subsequently led the struggle towards the indigenization of Christianity till his death in the early 90s. Interestingly, after pursuing this as a scholar at the University of Ibadan, he still kept at it as the leader (Patriarch) of the Methodist Church of Nigeria.

His many publications include: Olodumare: God in Yoruba Belief; Towards an Indigenous Church; and African Traditional Religion: A Definition.
