Buhari alone cannot fight corruption – Catholic Bishop

President Buhari

BY ABDULLAHI ISAH, MAIDUGURI

The Catholic Bishop of Maiduguri Diocese, Most Reverend Oliver Doeme Dashe has called on Nigerians to support President Muhammadu Buhari`s fight against corruption, as he alone cannot fight corruption.

The Bishop, who disclosed this at a press conference held at the St Patrick Catholic Church Maiduguri, said “APC and the National Assembly need to put their houses in order, as the party who has majority in the Senate cannot even confirm the EFCC boss because of their selfish interests.”

He said “Boko Haram insurgency is an upshot of corruption, as some people sponsored Boko Haram to achieve their selfish interest. If not for corruption Boko Haram should have been a past issue since but some people diverted money meant for purchasing arms to fight Boko Haram into their personal pockets  to the detriment of people’s lives” .
He called on Nigerians to support President Buhari in the fight against corruption for the betterment of Nigeria and Nigerians, as according to him, Nigeria is a rich country in terms of both natural and human resources and its citizen have no business being poor, if not for corruption.
On the issue of wanton destructions of property by Boko Haram, the Bishop said the church lost over N1 billion worth of property and that over 250 structures of the Church were destroyed.
In addition, he said, 80,000 Catholic members, 25 reverend fathers and 40 reverend sisters were displaced in 2014, as well as over 64,000 Nigerians in Miniwawo camp of Cameroon Republic taking refuge.
While commending the Federal Government’s counter insurgency war in the North East, Bishop Dashe said if not for the coming of President Buhari the fight against insurgency will not have been won, adding that the liberation of many communities and the capturing of Sambiza forest indicates that peace has been won.
He commended the military for a job well done and he called on them not to relax, as the terrorist always wants to show their presence by attacking soft targets.
