Peter Obi: Many political leaders are loyal to self interest, reckless looting of public resources

Mr. Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, said this in a post on his X (former Twitter) platform while commenting on the launch of a book by Bolaji Abdullahi, spokesperson of the ADC.
The book, titled The Loyalist, was launched in Abuja with dignitaries including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Governors Rotimi Amaechi and Senator Aminu Tambuwal and former Ministers and ex Governors, Kayode Fayemi and Rauf Aregbesola, in attendance.
Some others at the event were Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Senator Liyel Imoke, a one-time Minister and Governor, Alhaji Kashim Ibrahim-Imam and Hon. Emeka Ihedioha.
Speaking on the subject of loyalty, which he said is of utmost importance in Nigeria, in his post titled “Loyalty to Who?” Mr. Obi said: “We live in a nation where many elites in leadership positions demonstrate little to no loyalty to the country, its Constitution, its unity, its progress, or the welfare of its citizens.
“Instead, their loyalty often lies with self-interest and the reckless looting of public resources. It is disheartening that those who choose to uphold loyalty to the Constitution, advocate good governance, and prioritise the well-being of the people are frequently marginalised, victimised, or ostracised.
“Our political landscape is marked by a selfish interpretation of loyalty, rather than genuine loyalty to the nation.”
While commending Abdullahi for the publication of the book, Obi stressed that he remains “firmly committed to the unity of Nigeria, respect for the Constitution, the rule of law, and the welfare of our citizens,” concluding that “A new Nigeria is not just a dream; it is absolutely achievable.”
