Buhari’s daughter recalls father’s lesson on honesty
Late President Muhammadu Buhari’s daughter, Hadiza Mohammed, has revealed that her father always taught his children to live by good morals and never take what does not belong to them.
Hadiza, fondly called Nana, spoke to newsmen on Wednesday at Buhari’s private residence in Daura, Katsina State. She shared a childhood memory that left a lasting impression on her.
“I will never forget when we were children. Baba sent us to buy exercise books, and after buying them, we had ₦15 left. Instead of returning the change, we spent it on sweets,” she said.
“When we came back, Baba asked about the change, and we told him we had used it. He said, ‘You should have brought the change back to me. It is my choice to let you keep it or not.’
“He then taught us never to eat what belongs to others or take what is not ours. We thank God for the good upbringing Baba gave us,” she added.
Former President Buhari was buried on Tuesday evening, July 15, 2025, in his hometown Daura, in line with Islamic rites. His body was laid to rest as the sun set, following funeral prayers.
Earlier, President Bola Tinubu received Buhari’s remains at Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina. Tinubu, who arrived from Abuja at 1:42 p.m., inspected a guard of honour before the Nigerian Air Force plane carrying Buhari’s body landed at 1:51 p.m.
Buhari, who died in a London hospital on Sunday, July 13, was flown back to Nigeria with his wife Aisha Buhari, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila and other family members.
At the airport, Tinubu was joined by Vice President Shettima, Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, Niger’s Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine, former Niger President Issoufou Mahamadou, and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
Nine senior military officers served as pallbearers, carrying the casket draped in the Nigerian flag during a solemn military procession through a guard of honour of six officers and 96 soldiers. The casket was then placed in a military hearse for the journey to Daura.
The state funeral included full military honours and a 21-gun salute as Buhari was laid to rest.
