Court sentences grand mother for throwing day-old boy into bush

A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Akure, Ondo state has sentenced a grand mother to a month’s imprisonment and two months community service.
The grand mother, Bosede Oyetunde, was found guilty of throwing a day old baby boy into the bush.
The prosecuting police officer, DSP Ojumu Olayemi told the court that the accused, aged 36 committed the offence along with one Opeyemi Isaac around 8.00 pm at Omotoso, Ore road in Akure Magisterial District.
The Prosecution told the Court that both of them conspired to commit felony to wit murder and attempted to kill a day old baby boy who they wrapped in a nylon bag and thrown into the bush.
Both pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to them saying it was the devil’s work.
The Prosecution further told the Court that since their arrest at the point of crime, the baby was held at the special children centre in Akure where a naming ceremony was organized for him.
Apart from one month jail term, Chief Magistrate  O. A. Edwin ordered the grand mother to carry out two months community service at Igbotako Police Station.
The second accused is to be sent for a mental assessment as the Court observed that she was not mentally alright and the baby boy to be taken to the children’s home where the mother will be breastfeeding him.
