Dangote honours late Access Bank CEO, names Lagos refinery road ‘Herbert Wigwe road’

Aliko Dangote, the Chairman and CEO of Dangote Group, has honoured the late Access bank CEO Herbert Wigwe by naming the “biggest” road network leading to his Lagos refinery after him. The tribute comes following the tragic passing of Wigwe, his wife, and son in a helicopter crash in California, USA.
During a memorial program organized in Wigwe’s honor, Dangote spoke fondly of the late billionaire banker, likening him to a soldier despite not having served in the military.
Recall that on February 10, 2024, business moguls, Herbert Onyewumba Wigwe and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, died in a helicopter crash in the United States.
Also killed in the crash were Wigwe’s wife, Chizoba, their son and the two crew members.
The helicopter had taken off from Palm Springs Airport around 8:45 pm and was en route Boulder City, Nevada when it crashed at about 10 pm, the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department said.
“We were made aware of a downed aircraft at approximately 10:12 pm on February 10, 2024. The scene of the crash was determined to be east of the 15-Freeway, near Halloran Springs Road,” the sheriff’s department had said.
In honour of the deceased, Dangote announced, “Part of the 120km refinery road. The biggest road will now be named Herbert Wigwe Road,” underscoring the significance of the dedication.
By naming the road after Herbert Wigwe, Dangote believes that people will recognize and appreciate the legacy of the esteemed banker. He emphasized that Wigwe was universally loved and led a life worthy of emulation.
