Ogun Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as an advocate for peace, security, and development.
Abiodun eulogised Obasanjo at a reception held on Wednesday in Abeokuta to mark his 88th birthday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event took place at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta.
The governor stated that Obasanjo’s legacies extend beyond Nigeria and Africa, leaving a lasting impact on global affairs.
He highlighted the former president’s role in entrenching democracy in Nigeria as a significant achievement in the nation’s history.
“This was made possible by his commitment to democracy and national unity. He is an architect of modern Nigeria,” Abiodun said.
He added that current leaders recognise Obasanjo’s exemplary leadership and his dedication as a pragmatic community leader.
Abiodun reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to drawing inspiration from Obasanjo’s achievements and enduring legacies.
“History will continue to be kind to you because your story is deeply intertwined with Nigeria’s.
“The name Olusegun Aremu Okikiola Obasanjo will remain indelibly etched in the minds of generations to come.
“Beyond your distinguished military career, you remain a true patriot and a leader devoted to Nigeria’s progress,” Abiodun said.
He emphasised Obasanjo’s instrumental role in Nigeria’s first civilian-to-civilian transition as a landmark democratic achievement.
“Your resilience, vision, and relentless pursuit of excellence define you as a statesman and advocate for peace, security, and development,” he noted.
Obasanjo expressed gratitude to Almighty God for his journey and achievements over the years.
He described the two books launched at the event—Lest We Forget: Slavery, Slave Trade, Emancipation, and Reparation and Nigeria: Past and the Future—as timely.
He stressed that for Nigeria to fully break free from slavery’s legacy and colonialism, collective effort is essential.
NAN reports that dignitaries present included Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun and former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara.
Also in attendance were former governors Peter Obi, Emeka Ihedioha, Sam Egwu, Ibikunle Amosun, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and Sule Lamido.
