Director urges incoming administration to license private abattoirs

Director, Veterinary Services, Kano State Ministry of Agriculture, Dr Shehu Bawa , Saturday, reiterated the need for the incoming administration in the state to license private individuals to own abattoirs.

Bawa told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano that if interested persons were allowed to construct and operate abattoirs, it would boost the availability of meat in the state.

“If the state government can give licenses to individuals willing to establish abattoirs, it will go a long way to address some of the problems faced at the moment,’’ he said.

Bawa said that the number of abattoirs in the city were grossly inadequate to cater for the number of animals slaughtered in it daily.

According to him, the construction of new abattoirs will help to decongest the existing ones and ensure proper and effective inspection of animals before they are slaughtered.

“We have one abattoir in Dawanau but it is privately owned.

He said the two existing abattoirs at Bachirawa and Fagge were not only small but lacked the needed facilities.

“The government can build another abattoir at the eastern part of the city, to take care of the people around the area,’’ he added.
