Driving against traffic, major cause of road crashes in Nigeria – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said that driving against traffic was a major cause of road accidents in the country.

The Sector Commander of FRSC in Akwa Ibom, Mr Matthew Olonisaye, said this during the public enlightenment campaign organised for drivers and other road users in Uyo last Friday.

Olonisaye said that the exercise was to sensitise drivers and other road users to be disciplined while making use of the roads.

“We have noticed with dismay several trends of infractions, especially among commercial drivers, who are supposed to be above board compared to other categories of drivers.

“These infractions include driving against traffic known as one way, driving mechanically deficient vehicles, lane indiscipline, use of phones while driving and overloading,” noting that the mandate of the FRSC is “to eradicate road traffic crashes and create safe motoring environment.”

The sector commander said that with the good road network in Akwa Ibom state, drivers and all road users must contribute their efforts by being disciplined while driving.

Olonisaye commended the state government and the ministry of transport for the support accorded the agency.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Transport, Mr Uno Etim Uno, pledged the ministry’s support to ensure that drivers registered their vehicles to ensure proper monitoring.

Uno, who was represented by Mr Akpan Ekpeneobong, Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) said there was need for drivers and all road users to improve on their attitude while on the road.

Speaking on behalf of the commercial vehicle operators in the state, Mr Effiong Etim, assured that drivers would adhere to traffic rules to ensure safety on the roads.
