Enugu govt honours Corps members in a grand style

Enugu State Government has honoured ten 2014 Batch ‘C’ Corps members who served in the state for their exceptional performances during their service year. Five of them received the state government’s award worth thousands of naira while five others received the NYSC State Governing Board Chairman’s award.

Three corps members who absconded from service would be remobilized to start afresh while five others will serve various terms of extension of service for offences that contravened the bye laws of the NYSC scheme.

Three corps members died in the state in the course of their service year.

In an address on the occasion of their passing-out ceremony at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi commended them for their sincere contributions to their host communities in the areas of community development services and the growth of critical sectors of the state.

The governor who was represented by his deputy, Hon. Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo urged the corps members to utilize the opportunities offered by the programme to better their future. He noted that empowering the youth’s skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development in the NYSC programme is the surest way to reduce the current level of unemployment.

The governor expressed happiness that the NYSC Scheme has over the years contributed immensely to the growth and development of the nation. In his words, “apart from fostering national unity and integration, the scheme has become a veritable tool for the implementation of very important national development programme.” He added that the corps members’ contributions to the growth and development of the state in the areas of healthcare delivery, education, social services will be forever cherished.

In a brief remark, the State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Charles Ndukwe commended the corps members for their outstanding performances, especially in the areas of newly introduced health programme in the rural areas.

Mr. Ndukwe who is also the Chairman of the State NYSC Board disclosed that arrangement has been concluded to bring experts in different fields of human endeavours to participate in training the incoming corps members to expand the bounds of the programme.

Earlier in an address, the State Coordinator of NYSC Mrs. Nwano Ukagba noted that the corps members contributed immensely to the overall improvement of education in the state, adding that corps members form a substantial percentage of teaching staff of various public and private schools, especially in the rural communities of the state.

According to Mrs. Nwano, worthy of mention is the committed involvement of the corps members in the propagation of the skill acquisition programmes as an integral part of the formal school teaching and learning process in the state.

In her words, “in the various schools and communities where corps members were posted to serve, they mentored and transferred economic sustenance skills acquired under the NYSC programme.”

She commended Governor Ifeanyi and the people of Enugu State in general for the support and assistance the scheme has enjoyed under them. She said, “we greatly appreciate your Excellency for your deep interest in the welfare of corps members and the smooth operation of the scheme in the state.”
