Yao Benard and Nyima Nwagua scored the goals to ensure Enyimba FC bowed 0-2 to Rivers United FC in Aba on Tuesday September 12.
The final game of Rivers United FC’s pre-season programme saw the former champions visit their successors inside their own Stadium.
It was Yao, who broke the deadlock for Rivers United FC with a close-range finish after Alex Oyowah brilliantly displaced a defender to set him up for the game’s opener in the 63rd minute.
Rivers United FC skipper, Nyima Nwagua came on mid way into the second half and doubled the lead late in added time after overlapping left back Paul Odey had bulldozed his way into the box under severe pressure and found Nwagua.
The striker was aware enough to tap into the bottom corner of the net to sum up what was a dominant display by the Pride of Rivers.
Rivers United FC goalkeeper Abiodun Akande deserves mention too as his side walked away with the win. The shot stopper saved a penalty in the 26th minute in what proved to be a key moment of the encounter.
In the coming days, both teams will be involved with continental football action.
For Rivers United FC, a CAF Confederation’s Cup 2nd round preliminary round, 1st leg away tie in Yamoussoukro Cote D’Ivoire against Etoile Filante de Quagadougou awaits on September 17 while Enyimba International FC is preparing for the African Super League clash against Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca.
In the domestic league, no date has been announced for the commencement of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League season.
