FIFA U20WC: Nigeria’s Flying Eagles to face Argentina after 1–1 draw with Colombia

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have advanced to the Round of 16 at the 24th FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile after holding Colombia to a 1–1 draw in their final group game on Monday morning.

The seven-time African champions put up a strong performance in Talca, showing great resilience and attacking intent. Goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt made two crucial saves in the 23rd and 26th minutes to keep Nigeria in the game, while forwards Tahir Maigana, Kparobo Arierhi, and Suleman Sani kept the Colombian defence busy, striking the woodwork on multiple occasions.

Colombia took the lead in the 51st minute when Kener Gonzalez converted from Neyser Villareal’s assist. Despite the setback, the Flying Eagles pressed hard for an equaliser, and Odinaka Okoro was unlucky not to score in the 76th minute as his header was saved by the Colombian goalkeeper.

Nigeria’s persistence finally paid off four minutes from time when captain Daniel Bameyi calmly converted a penalty after Tahir Maigana’s shot was handled inside the box. The Flying Eagles almost snatched a winner in the closing stages, but Arierhi’s effort was blocked in the 89th minute.

The result confirmed Nigeria’s place in the Round of 16 as one of the best third-place teams. They will now face Argentina at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago on Wednesday, in a repeat of their quarter-final clash at the last edition, which Nigeria won 2–0 in San Juan.

In other fixtures, Colombia will face South Africa, while Norway take on Paraguay in the knockout stage.
