Saidu Bappa Malala of the Gombe State Ministry of Information has been returned as the newly elected Chairman of the Gombe State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Malala poled 92 votes to beat his distant rival Umar Ma’aji Gelengu who poled 37 votes while Yusuf Ishaq Baji poled 16 votes during a keenly contested and transparent election held at the State Secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
Six other elected officers comprising Musa Jibrin Tabra as Vice-Chairman, Vincent Danture as Secretary and Rebecca Caleb Main among others returned unopposed.
The election under the electoral committee chairman, Rebecca Muazu (Mrs.) of Voice of Nigeria (VON), followed the expiration of the tenure of the former executive committee led by Comrade Alhassan Yahaya.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, the Deputy National President of the union, Comrade Muktar Gidado expressed confidence in the ability of the new executives to steer the affairs of the Union for the next three years considering the caliber of the people elected.
While congratulating the new executives, he urged them to be committed in discharging their duties.
The North East Zonal Vice President of the union, Comrade Aishatu Ibrahim commended the electoral committee for conducting a free and fair election and also urged the new executives to adhere strictly by the constitution of the union.
Responding on behalf of the elected executives, the Chairman, Comrade Saidu Bappa Malala vowed that he and his team would abide by the constitution of the Union in discharging their duties.
