Group calls for enforcement of widow’ rights

Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin

Lagos, Oct 1, 2019

Dr(Mrs) Joe Okei-Odumakin, President, Center for Change, on Tuesday  called for the enforcement and respect of the rights of widows in the country.
Odumakin made the plea while delivering a lecture on widows rights, to mark the first anniversary of Kaffy Charity Foundation in Lagos.
According to her, widow’s rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights
“Ignoring the needs and concerns of widows around the world is ignoring a violation of the basic human rights of the most neglected of women.
“When widows are denied the right to access, own, control or inherit property and the land they live on, it is a violation of their rights.

” When these women and their children are evicted from their homes because their husbands have died, it is a violation of their rights,” Odumakin said.

The human rights crusader said that the forcing of widows into exploitative and risky sex work in order to support themselves and their families is a violation of their rights
She said that widows’ rights could be enhanced and enforced through the promotion of gender equality to erase the challenges faced by widows.

She also suggested legislation and outlawing of harmful practices against widows.
“Women’s empowerment programmes must be encouraged and promoted to end violence against women,” Odumakin said.

She called for the economic empowerment of widows, tax exemption, provision of access to credit and social welfare net for widows.

Odumakin thanked Mrs Omowunmi Abas, Chief Executive Officer, Kaffy Foundation and her team for the great work they were doing to ameliorate the plight of widows
