Unknown gunmen in Bayelsa state have kidnapped Chief Benjamin Weke, paramount ruler of Gbarantoru community of Yenagoa Local Government Area.
The 85 year old Monarch was abducted in the early hours of Friday by four gunmen.
The ransom seeking gunmen were said to have shot sporadically into the air to scare away residents before whisking their target away to an unknown destination.
A family source said His Highness Weke was kidnapped at about 1 am.
The source, who did not want to be named said, “Sadly, our father got kidnapped at about 1am in the morning of Friday, September 4 by four armed men.
“We do not know where he has been taken to as no contact has been made yet by his kidnappers. I am using this medium to call on all the relevant authorities to intervene in the matter and secure his release safely.”
Also, another family source called on the youths of Yenagoa Local Government Area to rise to the occasion and defend their areas.
“We should not be allowing people to come in to kidnap our people and elders always. Communities should liaise with security agencies and government to set up strong vigilance group to repel any possible abduction or other criminal acts in our areas,” the source said.
No ransom has been demanded from the family but when contacted, the Bayelsa State Police Command spokesman, Mr. Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident.
Butswat said the abduction took place by 1am on Friday but that the family could only establish contact with the Police around 5am.
The PPRO said, “It is true. The paramount ruler of Gbanrantoru community, His Highness Benjamin Weke was abducted in the early morning of Friday by four armed men.
“The family was only able to get across to the police by 5am. Before our operatives could get to the residence of the monarch, the gunmen had already whisked their victim away to yet-to-be-ascertained destination.
“The Joint Military Task Force and marine police have been alerted. They have mounted surveillance with a view to arresting the suspects and rescuing the octogenarian alive. Investigation is ongoing.”
