A two time former Governor of the old Mid West and the defunct Bendel State, Dr Samuel Ogbemudia has attributed the failure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 general elections to the party’s refusal to take full advantage of its victory in previous elections.
Ogbemudia who stated this when he was registered in the PDP’s biometric registration exercise in Benin on Monday, said the party mismanaged its victory in previous polls.
He also noted that the defeat would have been avoided if the leadership of the party had listened to advice from well meaning members and some leaders of the party.
Dr Ogbemudia who expressed belief that the party would regain it lost glory, said he was always available to provide whatever support needed to bring the party back to its pride of place in the country.
He, however, debunked the insinuation that he had relinquished his membership of the PDP.
According to him, “the party’s initial mistake was made when the party refused to take full advantage of its victory. Therefore we mismanage the victory. It is the outcome we are all suffering now.”
Continuing, he said, “I will do all that is necessary to enable the party get back to its winning way.
“I will only cease being a member of the PDP when I can no longer breathe. While I am alive, I will continue to support a PDP that is well led by a remarkable Nigerian who understands the act of service.
“This card, I will treasure it, I will continue to believe that it is the only passport to a destination that is yet to be carved out.
“In the past few months, I decided to maintain a low profile and not to be involved with what the party was doing because the party did not pay attention to very important survival advice given to them at different times and at different fora.
“I thought that I would have nothing to do with them until you (Chief Raymond Dokpesi)came in. If you had not come yourself, I would not have listened to anybody.
“I am glad to be registered to show that I am a PDP man. I will continue to be one but it does not mean that when I see the truth I will not say it.
“If telling the truth is termed to be anti-party activity, then I have to be excused because I cannot tell lies in order to survive party discipline. I want to assure you that I am here and ready to offer any advice that will help the PDP regain its lost glory.”
He urged other party members to embrace the biometric exercise and register to enable the party have a data base of its members.
“I believe with this biometric, every member will be a financial member but those who will want to reap where they didn’t sow, that is entirely up to the party to decide,” he stated.
Earlier, the chairman of the PDP mobilization and biometrics committee, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, said the time had come when all hands must be on deck to correct some abnormalies in the conduct of the party’s affairs.
Dokpesi had during the flag off of the biometric registration, stressed the need to give the party back to the people and end the era where individuals decided who got what in the party.
“This is time to sit back and have a very sober reflection. It is a time that we have to call back on you the founding fathers of the party to assist to provide the fatherly advice to the party to get us out of this abyss we are into,” he said.
Chieftain of the party in Edo South, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion and a former governor of the state, Chief Lucky Igbinedion were also earlier captured and presented with their membership cards.
